Woollens and Worsteds
She Shed, 2022
Petone Settlers Museum
Curated by Bronwyn Lloyd
The unwritten history of women’s role in primary industry in Aotearoa in the 20th century is the focus of Woollens and Worsteds. Taking written material and visual imagery from historical research, and an imagined story of a mill worker, Woollens and Worsteds aims to explore the Petone Woollen Mill’s material history. The entire work is created from scratch, with a hand woven wool fabric base embellished with wool embroidery. The front of the work celebrates the public face of the company and the physicality of the mill, while the back imagines a more personal story of a female mill worker.
