Back Stitch (Flying Geese) explores the idea of home, when located in and crafted into the landscape and domestic space. The work opens with a still of the site where the artist’s childhood home was built, projected onto a quilt made by the artist’s mother.
How does a place become a home? Often it’s labour put into a piece of land, by building houses and crafting the natural environment, that makes people feel they belong. It takes effort and time to make both a home and an embroidery. However both these things also have a reverse side, the messy stitches and gardens with weeds growing. Yet there is pleasure and comfort to be found in these imperfections – like a warm quilt.
